In response to the open brief of the extended major project, I aim to create an immersive, game-like experience that merges the real world with the virtual.
The user will be placed in a dark room with deep atmospheric noises playing. They will then hold a two handed, rifle like, gun that will have sensors monitoring its movement. This movement data is then fed into the computer which in turn, moves a camera in a virtual world. This allows the virtual camera to move in the same manner as the gun in the real world. I will then mount a small screen on the gun which will create a window into this virtual world. I can then create objects, creatures and characters in the virtual world that can only be seen when the user points the gun at them. |
I aim to experiment between creating a game like experience where the user fends off hordes of zombie monsters through to creating an artistic experience focusing on atmosphere and tension.
Using surround sound headphones, I can use various noises to hint toward the position of a point of interest in the virtual world. This means the user will hear a monster approaching them from over their shoulder, they won’t be able to see it with their eyes alone, so they point the gun in the direction of the sound, get the monster in sight and shoot it down.
The gun that the user holds should be free to move without being mounted or secured in any way. This freedom of movement is important in the piece as I feel it highlights a sense of uncertainty, rather than having an object mounted on a moveable platform, which ties the user to a sturdy object creating a physiological point of safety. I also think the gun should have some form of kickback mechanism to enhance the feeling of power in the weapon. |
